Electronic waste is the fastest-growing waste problem in the world today, with volume increasing by as much as 500% annually. Every year, we generate approximately 40 million tons of e-waste—which is the equivalent of throwing away 800 laptops every single second!

The majority of e-waste is shipped to Asia or Africa under the guise of 'recycling.' While that may sound good, in reality, it is simply a cheap and easy way to get rid of the vast amounts of waste we generate. Do you remember your parents' reaction when you threw something into a campfire as a child? Can you recall that stinging in your eyes and the stench in your nostrils from toxic, melting plastic? Now, imagine that the tons of electronics sent to third-world countries are, for the most part, simply burned!

The soil in 'Guiyu' – one of the world's largest e-waste sites located in China – records some of the highest concentrations of dioxins and heavy metals on the planet. Lead levels in the local water supply exceed safety standards by more than 2,400 times. Tragically, many children work in these hazardous areas.
